It was, I thought, a decisive defeat. So much so, had someone said to me as I left the game, ‘You saw the premiers today,’ I would have thought, ‘Yes, Geelong.’ As Alexander Petropulo leaves Etihad Stadium, he tells his daughter that the Dogs will beat Geelong when they play in six rounds at Geelong where the Dogs have rarely won in the course of their entire history. Later, when I ask Alexander to explain his behaviour, he says he was ‘evoking the philosophical mind’.

Alexander Petropulo’s father – the mad Russian of William Dick’s Bunch of Ratbags – was educated, intelligent and as broken as the catastrophic history he had fled. He drank and gambled. His wife, who had survived being assigned as a slave labourer by the Nazis, was a tiny woman who, in the words of her son, was ‘always looking to take the positivity out of every aspect of life’. When Reg Cook, one of his mother’s boarders, took young Alexander to watch the Bulldogs, the boy found himself with an adult male who thought like his mother. A de facto father. The Dogs would lose by ten goals, they’d be standing in the rain, and Reg Cook would find something good to say about the match like ‘Wasn’t that a lovely goal so-and-so kicked?’ Alexander tells Carmen the Dogs will beat Geelong in Geelong because ‘there is so much character in this team’.
